DESIGN IN THE AGE OF AI

Filed Under: Design Advice, Interior Design

Artificial intelligence has changed the way we approach almost everything—including interior design. With a few prompts, AI can generate beautiful rooms, suggest color palettes, recommend furniture styles, and even create remarkably realistic renderings of spaces that do not yet exist.

It is an exciting tool, and one I believe has a place in the design process. But there is an important distinction between creating an appealing image and designing a home that actually works for the people who live there.

AI can generate possibilities. An experienced interior designer knows which possibilities are worth pursuing—and how to turn them into reality.

A Beautiful Image Is Not a Design Plan

One of AI's greatest strengths is its ability to create inspiration quickly. You can ask for a warm, contemporary living room with natural materials and receive an image within seconds.

The problem is that the image may not correspond to anything you can actually build or buy. The proportions may be wrong. Furniture may not exist in the dimensions shown. Lighting may appear to come from an impossible source. Cabinetry details may not function. Materials may behave differently in real life than they appear on a screen.

An experienced designer looks beyond the picture.

We consider dimensions, circulation, construction requirements, scale, lighting, ergonomics, durability, installation, lead times, budgets, and hundreds of other details that determine whether a room succeeds once you are actually living in it.

Experience Helps You Avoid Expensive Mistakes

Interior design involves an extraordinary number of interconnected decisions.

Move a wall, and you may affect electrical placement, flooring, cabinetry, and lighting. Choose a sofa that is six inches too deep, and the room suddenly feels cramped. Select the wrong countertop material, and you may discover the maintenance requirements don't fit your lifestyle. These mistakes can be expensive.

An experienced designer has spent years seeing what works, what does not, and what problems are likely to occur before they happen. That knowledge cannot be generated simply by looking at thousands of photographs. Experience creates judgment.

After decades of working with homes, contractors, craftspeople, furnishings and materials, a designer develops an instinct for proportion, quality and practicality. We can often recognize an issue long before it becomes an expensive problem.

Your Home Should Reflect You, Not an Algorithm

AI works by drawing upon patterns in existing information. That makes it very good at showing you versions of what has already been done. But the best homes are not created by assembling trends. They are deeply personal.

A designer spends time understanding how you live, what you notice, what you love, what frustrates you, and how you want your home to feel.

Perhaps you entertain frequently. Maybe you need a quiet place to read in the afternoon. You may have furniture or artwork with sentimental value that deserves to become part of the design rather than being replaced.

Some things people cannot always articulate. An experienced designer learns to listen for them.

Sometimes a client tells me they dislike a room but cannot explain why. It may be the scale, lighting, balance, color temperature, circulation, or other factors that make the space feel “off.” Part of a designer's job is discovering the problem behind the problem.

Good Design Is About More Than Appearance

We are increasingly learning how profoundly our surroundings influence us.

Natural light, views, materials, color, pattern, acoustics, and spatial organization can affect our mood, comfort, and sense of well-being.

This is one reason I incorporate principles of biophilic design and neuroaesthetics into my work. A beautiful home should not only photograph well. It should support the people who live in it. There is a significant difference between asking, "Does this room look beautiful?" and asking, "How does this room make you feel?"

The second question is where thoughtful design begins.

Designers Know What Quality Looks Like

A photograph cannot always tell you whether a sofa will still look beautiful ten years from now.

An experienced designer understands the difference between furniture that merely looks good online and furniture that is well constructed. We know what to look for in upholstery, fabrics, cabinetry, lighting, rugs, stone, wood, and finishes.

We also know where it makes sense to invest—and where it does not. That guidance can be especially valuable when clients are making significant investments in their homes.

AI Is a Tool. A Designer Is a Partner.

I don't believe homeowners have to choose between technology and professional design. AI can be wonderful for exploration. It can help communicate ideas, visualize possibilities, and begin conversations.

But it cannot walk through your home and notice how the morning light changes a room. It cannot sit in a chair and tell you whether it is comfortable. It cannot coordinate with your contractor when something unexpected appears behind a wall. It cannot understand why your grandmother's table matters to you.

And it cannot replace the perspective that comes from years of designing real homes for real people.

The most successful interiors are not simply generated. They are considered, refined, and carefully created.

Technology may help us imagine what is possible. Experience helps us create a home that is beautiful, functional, enduring—and unmistakably yours.
