STONE OR PLASTIC?

Stone or Plastic

When it comes to creating a home that expresses comfort, joy, health, and well-being, every detail matters—especially, the paint on your walls. Traditional latex paints have long been the standard choice for interior applications, but an emerging alternative is redefining expectations by prioritizing wellness and environmental sustainability. In this article, we'll explore the differences between stone-based paint, and conventional latex paints, focusing on aspects that matter most to discerning homeowners.

As an aside, healthy wallcoverings are a wonderful alternative to paint, assuming it is produced and installed with clean materials. Most of us, however, use at least some paint in our homes.

Composition and Ingredients

Latex paints are water-based and commonly use synthetic binders such as acrylics, polyvinyl acetate (PVA), or vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE). These synthetic components literally wrap our interiors in plastic, which affects indoor air quality and pose health concerns. The walls can’t breathe.

In contrast, a new paint in the market, Alkemis paint, is crafted from all-natural, mineral-based materials, including a clear quartz binder and artist-quality crystalline pigments. This composition results in a product that is non-toxic, zero-VOC, and free from synthetic pigments or chemical colorants. As the paint is porous, it breathes and therefore won’t trap moisture.

The mineral quartz binder allows the natural pigments to shine through with distinctive luminosity and light reflective value.

Health and Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality is a crucial consideration for homeowners focused on health and well-being. While many latex paints have reduced VOC levels, they may still contain other chemicals that can off-gas into the home environment.

Alkemis Paint's zero-VOC formulation ensures that it does not contribute to indoor air pollution. Its naturally high PH is therefore anti-fungal and anti-mold. Additionally, it is free from solvents, plasticizers, preservatives, and biocides, making it well-suited for allergy sufferers and those seeking a healthier home environment.

Durability and Performance

Latex paints are known for their quick drying times, ease of application, and flexibility, which helps prevent cracking over time. However, they may not be as durable as some alternative formulations and can struggle with adhesion on certain surfaces. Because they lock-in the pores of the walls, moisture can build up creating an environment friendly to mold, and the paint can blister and peel. The lifespan of a conventional paint is typically 5 - 7 years.

Produced with 40% more solids than conventional paint, Alkemis offers impressive durability, with a lifespan exceeding 25 years. Its mineral-based composition provides a breathable finish that is mold-resistant, non-flammable, and self-priming. These attributes contribute to a long-lasting and high-performing wall covering.

Conventional paint will out-gas for up to 10 years. This out-gassing exposes you and your family to harmful chemicals, fungicides, VOCs and Prop 65 elements that have been shown to cause cancer. Painting over an existing painted surface, Alkemis Paint can encapsulate the harmful effects of this out-gassing.

Environmental Impact

The environmental footprint of a product is a growing concern for many homeowners. Traditional latex paints, even those labeled as low-VOC, often contain synthetic petrochemical binders and other additives that can contribute to environmental pollution. Architectural paint is the largest contributor to the microplastics found in our oceans.

Alkemis Paint distinguishes itself with a commitment to sustainability. It is one of the few paints in North America to achieve Cradle to Cradle Certified® status, reflecting its environmentally

responsible production and composition. The use of abundant and renewable minerals aligns with a biophilic approach to design and living, where we biologically bridge the gap between our interiors, and the environment.

Another interesting fact: One gallon of Alkemis paint absorbs the carbon dioxide equivalent to nine trees!

Aesthetic Qualities

Aesthetics play a significant role in creating a comfortable and inviting home. We want our spaces to look and feel beautiful. Latex paints may offer a wide range of colors and finishes, providing flexibility in design choices. However, the synthetic binders can sometimes mask the vibrancy of pigments, even in paints utilizing multiple pigments to create more sophisticated colors.

A mineral-based formulation allows for a depth and richness of color that is difficult to achieve with synthetic binders. With natural pigments embedded in a clear quartz binder, Alkemis Paint provides a luminous and dynamic finish that enhances the overall experience of a space.

Application Considerations

Both latex and Alkemis Paints are designed for ease of application. Latex paints are known for their user-friendly nature, with easy cleanup and quick drying times. Alkemis Paint, while fundamentally different from latex paints, is also easy to apply and requires no special equipment or training.

However, it is essential to follow the specific application instructions provided to ensure optimal performance. For example, cutting in with Alkemis paint requires a very wet brush that can then be blended in to avoid streaks.

Cost Implications

Cost is often a deciding factor in home improvement projects. Conventional paints are generally more affordable and widely available, making them a popular choice if budget is a significant factor.

Alkemis Paint represents a premium option, reflecting its high-quality, natural ingredients and sustainable production methods. While the initial investment is slightly higher, the long-term benefits including durability, health advantages, and environmental responsibility, may justify the expense for those prioritizing these factors.

In Conclusion

Choosing the right paint involves balancing various factors, including health considerations, environmental impact, aesthetic preferences, and budget. While traditional latex paints offer convenience and a broad spectrum of options, Alkemis Paint provides a compelling alternative for homeowners dedicated to creating spaces that promote well-being and sustainability.

By understanding the distinctions between these products, you can make an informed decision that aligns with your values and enhances the comfort and health of your home. However, longer lasting and better for your health and the environment? That makes the choice a bit difficult to argue.

NOTE: I am not affiliated in any way to Alkemis Paints. I am simply incredibly impressed with this product and its technology.
